04 · Decks

Deck building that stays solid

A deck is only as good as the frame underneath it. We frame it on proper footings with the right joist spacing for the decking you pick.

Sheet 04

Material

Composite

  • No staining or sealing
  • Holds colour and resists rot
  • Higher upfront cost
  • Needs closer joist spacing
Joists typically 12″ on centre

Wood (pressure-treated or cedar)

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Natural look, easy to repair
  • Needs staining or sealing every few years
  • Cedar resists insects and rot naturally
Joists typically 16″ on centre

Size & layout

How the deck sits against your house.

Landing deck

A small platform at a back door, roughly as wide as the door and stairs.

Partial width

Covers part of the back wall. Room for a table, chairs and a barbecue.

Full width or wraparound

Runs the full back of the house or wraps a corner for separate zones.

Height & stairs

Ground level

Low decks close to grade. Often no stairs or just one step down.

Under 24″ off the ground

Raised

Decks at main-floor height over a walkout or sloped yard. Guards and stairs required.

Over 24″ needs guards

Multi-level

Two or more levels joined by steps or a landing. Useful on steep lots.

Landings between flights

Decks more than about 24″ (600 mm) off the ground need guards, and most attached decks need a permit. We'll confirm the rules for your address.

Railing

Metal pickets

Slim aluminum or steel pickets. Low maintenance and keeps the view open.

Wood pickets

Matches a wood deck. Can be stained or painted to suit the house.

Glass

Tempered glass panels between posts. Best for a view.
